Cabinet recommends revocation of President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh: Reports
This follows the Supreme Court’s refusal to dismiss a plea seeking to restrain the state's governor from swearing in a new government.
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday reportedly recommended the revocation of President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh. The recommendation comes after the Supreme Court refused to restrain Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa from swearing in a new government in the state, PTI reported.
Congress leader Kalikho Pul on Monday submitted a memorandum to Rajkhowa staking claim to form a government in the state. Pul led a joint delegation of 32 members of the state assembly – including 19 rebel Congress MLAs, 11 Bharatiya Janata Party legislators and two independent leaders, along with the leader of Opposition Tamiyo Taga – to meet the governor at Raj Bhavan. The Congress then moved the apex court, seeking an order to disallow any new government formation and to maintain status quo.
President’s Rule was imposed in Arunachal Pradesh on January 26, following several months of political crisis in the state. What started as dissidence within the Congress party grew into a rift between the state government and the governor, who was seen as an emissary of the Centre. Former chief minister Nabam Tuki had called the move “politically motivated”.
