Zika virus impact: Tata Zica is now officially called Tiago
The company launched a name-hunt contest on social media and asked people to suggest a new name for the car, following the Zika virus outbreak.
Tata Motors on Monday announced the new name of its Zica hatchback – Tata Tiago. For the uninitiated, the Indian automaker had decided to drop the name Zica following the outbreak of the homophonic Zika virus. The company launched a name-hunt contest on social media and asked people to suggest a new name for the car.
According to the Financial Express, the company received over 37,000 names from people during the three-day activity, before three were finally shortlisted – Adore, Civet and Tiago. The latter was picked as the winner following a final round of voting.
Tata had already started promoting the car as Zica with a marketing campaign starring Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi, before the World Health Organisation declared the Zika virus outbreak as an international public health emergency last month.
