At least 11 people, including an Afghan militia commander, were killed by a suicide bomber in the country's eastern province of Kunar, near the border with Pakistan, on Saturday. At least 40 other people were wounded in the attack, officials said.

Provincial Governor Wahidullah Kalimzai told Reuters the bomber rode up on a motorcycle to the entrance of a government compound in the town of Asadabad and blew himself up. “Most of victims were civilians and children who were either passing by or playing in the park,” he said.

While no one has claimed the attack yet, reports said the target of the bombing was a militia commander named Haji Khan Jan, who had been involved in a number of operations against the Taliban in his district last year.
