At least 30 killed in Somalia twin bombings
Al-Shabaab, an Islamist group affiliated with al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attacks in the town of Baidoa.
At least 30 people were killed in Baidoa, Somalia, on Sunday when car bomb exploded outside a restaurant, and suicide bomber attacked a busy junction in separate incidents. Islamist militant group al-Shabaab, affiliated with al-Qaeda, took responsibility for the bombings, making it the fourth such attack by the group in Somalia this year. Around 60 people were injured in the bombings.
Al-Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab told Reuters, “We targeted government officials and forces”. The bombings took place while African leaders met in Djibouti for a summit and called for increased international support for forces fighting insurgents in the country.
The blasts follow a car bomb attack in the capital Mogadishu on Friday (pictured above) that killed 14 people. The country has been embroiled in an ongoing civil war as the militant group has been fighting against the Somali government.
