Parliament: AIADMK disrupts sessions in both Houses, protests against Karti Chidambaram
The party demanded action against former Union minister P Chidambaram's son for his involvement in the Aircel-Maxis scam.
Members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Tuesday disrupted both houses of Parliament, protesting against Congress leader P Chidambaram's son Karti's alleged involvement in the Aircel-Maxis scam. Recent raids by the Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate revealed that Karti Chidambaram acquired huge amounts of money while his father P Chidambaram was a Union minister between 2006 and 2014.
The clearance that Malaysian company Maxis Communication got from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board to acquire Aircel shares was also illegal. Most financial transactions relating to the acquisition were overseen by a Singapore-based company that Karti Chidambaram owns.
AIADMK members also held up copies of an English newspaper that revealed Karti Chidambaram had invested money in real estate across the world, according to ED and IT department raids. The Indian Express reported that when Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge attempted to raise the Rohith Vemula issue in Lok Sabha, he was shouted down by AIADMK leaders. Following their protests, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned.
