Police say Smriti Irani’s car did not cause accident that killed man on Yamuna Expressway
The family of the Agra-based doctor, who died in the highway pile-up, alleged that the HRD minister ignored pleas of help from two children who were with him and got injured as well.
On Monday, police officials said a car from Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani’s convoy was not responsible for killing a doctor and causing a pile-up on the Yamuna Expressway on Saturday night. The doctor’s family filed an FIR and alleged that two children injured in the pile-up had appealed to Irani for help, but that she ignored them.
The FIR also said a car that was part of her motorcade hit Dr Ramesh Nagar’s bike, killing him and injuring two minors. They said that the children received medical attention seven hours after they were hurt.
However, ANI reported that police and eyewitnesses said Irani called for help and an ambulance arrived at the scene soon after. A ministry spokesperson also said that the car named in the FIR was not a part of her convoy, and that she had immediately called a senior police officer and asked for an ambulance.
Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Yadav, said Irani’s car crashed into the pile-up on the highway, minutes after Nagar was already dead and his two family members injured. Sanjay Kumar, deputy superintendent of police, said the driver, who fled the scene, was booked for the accident. The accident took place on Saturday night after heavy rain in the National Capital Region.
