The latest round of talks between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Peoples Democratic Party over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir have failed, according to reports. Following a meeting between leaders of both parties on Friday, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said that the PDP's "new demands" to form a government were "not acceptable". He added that the BJP wanted the same conditions that were agreed with former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who died following a prolonged illness on January 7. Madhav also said that it is the PDP's responsibility to choose a new chief minister.

The BJP and PDP were part of a coalition government from December 2014 till Sayeed's death, after which the state has been under governor's rule.
