Tamil Nadu elections: M Karunanidhi says DMK open to DMDK alliance
The Congress has already allied with M Karunanidhi's party and is reportedly in the middle of seat-sharing talks.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M Karunanidhi on Monday said his party was still in talks with actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam for an alliance ahead of Tamil Nadu elections scheduled for May 16. Karunanidhi's comments came a day after his son and DMK treasurer MK Stalin said the party will not give a cabinet berth to its allies if they formed the state government. The Congress has already allied with the DMK and is reportedly in the middle of seat-sharing talks. The two parties had come together for state polls in 2011 as well.
Though the DMDK had earlier announced it will contest the election on its own, the DMK and Left parties have both said they are holding alliance discussions with Vijayakanth's party. Communist Party of India leader Mutharasan also hinted at an alliance with the DMDK, The News Minute reported. The DMDK had allied with J Jayalalithaa's All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for the 2011 polls, but an alliance this year looks unlikely. In February, 10 DMDK legislators quit the party to join the AIADMK, toppling Vijayakanth from his Leader of Opposition post.
