Tamil Nadu polls: Congress finalises seat-sharing plan with DMK, will contest from 41 constituencies
In the 2011 Assembly elections, the Congress had fought 63 seats.
After days of indecision, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Congress finalised a seat-sharing agreement on Monday morning. The Congress will contest 41 out of the 234 Assembly seats, 22 fewer than the number of seats they had stood from in the 2011 polls. The constituencies have not been finalised yet. The Times of India reported that the seat-sharing committee will meet later on Monday to identify the Congress’ constituencies. Elections will be held in Tamil Nadu on May 16.
The DMK is up against Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In 2011, they lost to the AIADMK, winning just 23 seats. Recently, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko brought up the 2G scam case, which was a major poll plank in the 2011 elections. The Times of India had reported that the Central Bureau of Investigation recently called in DMK chief Karunanidhi’s secretary for questioning, suggesting that the scam might be an issue in the upcoming polls as well.
