The murder case of National Investigation Agency officer Tanzil Ahmed has been solved, Uttar Pradesh Police said on Tuesday, after announcing they had arrested two people. Police also believe a family dispute involving a share in a property deal was the motive behind the murder, PTI reported.

According to Inspector General of Police (Bareilly) Vijay Kumar Meena, Ahmed’s brother-in-law’s nephew Rehan was among the two arrested. The other accused was identified as his accomplice Zainul. However, police have yet to nab Muneer, who was the alleged mastermind behind Ahmed’s murder, Meena said. Police had earlier announced a bounty of Rs 50,000 for anyone who helps provide information that would help arrest Muneer, the PTI report added.

The accused followed the 45-year-old NIA officer on a motorcycle after he left his niece’s wedding reception late on April 2. They overtook his vehicle at Sahaspur village in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh, where Muneer allegedly fired 24 shots at Ahmed and four at his wife Farzana, while their two children watched from the rear seat of their car.

Police initially believed Ahmed’s murder was a “planned attack”, but had not disregarded the possibility of a terror angle as the NIA officer had been involved in the investigation of a number of cases, including those related to the banned terror outfit, Indian Mujahideen.
