The Bharatiya Janata Party launched their manifesto ahead of the Tamil Nadu polls and joined the host of state parties promising a total ban on the sale of liquor in the state. Earlier in the month, ruling party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam promised prohibition. The BJP also said it would revive bull-taming sport jallikattu, which was a regular feature in some parts of the state before the Supreme Court banned it earlier this year.

As alcohol forms a large part of the state’s revenue, the party promised to take over sand and granite mining to compensate for the loss in revenue. Other promises in the manifesto included a waiver on farmer loans, uninterrupted power supply, a 50% subsidy on solar power production, and handing over Hindu temples to a board. Union minister Nitin Gadkari launched the party’s manifesto on Thursday, with state party leaders.

The party won a 5.4% vote share in the last state elections, which were swept by the J Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK .
