IPL: Gujarat Lions beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in a nail-biter
Virat Kohli's maiden century of the league could not lead his team to victory, with Gujarat's batsmen all putting up steady performances.
The Gujarat Lions beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets in an Indian Premier League match on Sunday, despite an impressive century by RCB captain Virat Kohli. The tournament's 19th match was held at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.
Bangalore won the toss and opted to bat. Dhawal Kulkarni's early dismissal of opener Shane Watson did not bode well for the Royal Challengers, who were missing one of their key players, Chris Gayle. However, Kohli took over the reins and ended the first innings at 180/2 for Bangalore, scoring his maiden century of the league.
The Lions got off to a steady start, till Kane Richardson sent Dwayne Smith back to the dugout in the fifth over, and Tabraiz Shamsi dismissed Brendon McCullum in the eighth. Skipper Suresh Raina's dismissal at a crucial point seemed like the end of the game for the Lions, which needed more than 22 runs to win off the last two overs. But Dinesh Karthik picked up the pace, bagging his 50th half century of the league, and Dwayne Bravo finished the game with three balls to spare.
