Power failure at Delhi athletics meet prevents athletes from qualifying for Olympics
The blame-game for the lapse started after the event, with different federations holding others responsible.
A power failure at the Indian Grand Prix in Delhi, a qualifying event for the Olympics on Sunday, robbed prospective Indian athletes of the chance to qualify for the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janiero. As a result of the power failure, manual recording was done for the events, which the International Association of Athletics does not consider for its records. Subsequently, the event lost its Olympic status.
The blame-game for the event started, with the Athletics Federation of India holding the Delhi State Federation responsible for the lapse, while the DSF blamed the Sports Authority of India, reported The Indian Express.
Both Amiya Kumar Mallick and Srabani Nanda had clocked 100 metre dash times that were above Olympic qualifying standards. Unfortunately, they missed out on their chance to qualify as the records were not official.
"It's disappointing because I know I had run a quick time. But it will not count for anything because the electronic timing was not working," Mallick said.
