India ranked third worldwide in doping violations in 2014: WADA report
Athletics had the highest number of dopers in the country, followed by power-lifting and weight-lifting, according to the World Anti-Doping Agency.
With 96 cases of doping violations in 2014, India ranks third worldwide in a report on global doping statistics released by the World Anti-Doping Agency on Thursday. The two countries above India in the list are Russia (148 cases) and Italy (123).
Athletics had the highest number of doping violation cases in India – 29, followed by power-lifting (23) and weight-lifting (22). Seventy nine of the 96 athletes failed tests during a sporting event, while the 13 others were caught out of competition.
The other countries in the top 10 are Belgium (91 cases), France (91), Turkey (73), Australia (49), China (49), Brazil (46) and South Korea (43). In total, athletes from 109 countries spread across 83 sports violated the anti-doping rules.
