Rajnath Singh promises tighter security for Rahul Gandhi after assassination threat
The Congress party's Puducherry unit said it received the warnings written in Tamil, but it is unclear where they came from.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday assured top Congress leaders that party Vice President Rahul Gandhi will get adequate security, after they claimed he had received an assassination threat earlier in the day. A delegation of Congress leaders met Singh in New Delhi to discuss the situation. Party leader Anand Sharma confirmed that Singh assured them of “prompt action and security enhancement”.
The party has not disclosed where the threats came from, though the Congress’ Puducherry unit reported receiving them. Gandhi is expected to address a public rally there on Tuesday, ahead of the upcoming elections in the Union Territory. Congress leaders said the threats were written in Tamil, NDTV reported. The party also wants the Centre to look into the incident and track the perpetrators.
Two members of the Gandhi family have been assassinated in the past while they were serving as Prime Minister – Indira Gandhi in 1984 and Rajiv Gandhi, her son and Rahul Gandhi’s father, in 1991. Rahul Gandhi and his mother, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, are under the care of the Special Protection Group, which is the highest level of security in the country.
