Lok Sabha finishes business, wraps up Budget session ahead of time
The Rajya Sabha could have followed suit if not for pending valedictory speeches to be made by 58 retiring members.
The government decided to wrap up the current Budget session of Parliament in the Lok Sabha ahead of time on Wednesday as there was no business left to be taken up, reported The Indian Express. The lower House was adjourned sine die and Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced that not a minute of its proceedings was interrupted during this session. The Rajya Sabha, however, could not conclude its proceedings on Thursday because of pending valedictory speeches by 58 retiring members, and the death of a sitting member, Praveen Rashtrapal, on Thursday.
The Lok Sabha clocked 121% productivity this session while the Rajya Sabha worked for 94% of its scheduled time as of Wednesday, according to PRS Legislative Research. During the second half of the session, the Lok Sabha passed eight bills, including the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the Regional Centre for Biotechnology Bill, 2016, the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Bill, 2015, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2015, the Anti-Hijacking (Amendment) Bill, 2010, the Rajendra Central Agricultural University Bill, 2015, the Finance Bill, 2016, and the Railways Appropriation Bill, 2016.
The Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2016, and the Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws and Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Bill, 2016, were introduced this session, and were referred to the standing committee for further consideration. Legislators also discussed the swelling water crisis in the country. In the Lok Sabha, Question Hour functioned for 93% of its scheduled time, and 77% of its designated time in Rajya Sabha.
