The world’s oldest living person died in New York City, Gerontology Research Group announced on Friday. Susannah Mushatt Jones, known fondly as "Miss Susie" was 116 years and 311 days old. Her death on Thursday now makes Emma Morano-Martinuzzi, a 116-year-old woman in Italy, the oldest living person, according to the group, Reuters reported.
Born in Alabama, USA, in 1899, Jones was the daughter of sharecroppers and the granddaughter of slaves. She worked as a housekeeper and childcare provider in New York, according to Guinness World Records. She had said that the secret to her long life was plenty of sleep and abstinence from alcohol and smoking.
According to the Gerontology Research Group, the oldest verified person was Frenchman Jeanne Calment, who died aged 122 years and 164 days in 1997.
