Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday will announce the draft Bill on statehood for New Delhi, in a move that is expected to trigger another war of words between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Centre. The Bill will be made public to seek people’s opinions and suggestions, ANI reported. Its final draft will be tabled in the upcoming session of Delhi Assembly, following which it will be sent to the Centre.

Granting statehood to a region is a matter that requires Parliament’s approval. For Delhi to be granted statehood, Parliament needs to amend the Government of National Capital Territory Act.

Earlier, former Home Affairs Minister LK Advani had also tabled the Statehood Bill of Delhi in Parliament. It was a promise all parties made during their election campaigns in Delhi at that time.
