JNU student arrested for allegedly raping classmate in hostel room
The incident took place in December, but the 23-year-old woman filed a complaint on May 19.
A Jawaharlal Nehru University student has been arrested for allegedly raping a classmate in December, reported The Indian Express. The incident took place in the accused's hostel room after a party that was attended by eight other people, including his girlfriend. The victim, as well as the accused, are pursuing masters degrees from the Centre for Historical Studies.
The 23-year-old-victim accused the couple of making her drink copious amount of alcohol at the party. “After everyone left, the accused raped the girl, who was intoxicated. The victim realised that she had been sexually assaulted only when she woke up the next morning,” said a senior police officer.
In March, the woman had approached the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment, after deliberating on the social consequences of speaking up. “We submitted the GSCASH report to police. The girl was not ready to file a case earlier so it took us some time to submit the report,” an university official told the newspaper. On May 19, a case under Section 376 (rape) was registered against the 23-year-old, who was arrested the next day.
