Puducherry deadlock: Three Congress leaders stake claim to the chief minister's post
All India Congress Committee General Secretary V Narayanasamy and party chief A Namachivayam met Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday to resolve the issue.
Even days after the states that recently went to polls announced their chief ministers, Puducherry has yet to choose from three contenders for its top post – All India Congress Committee General Secretary V Narayanasamy, party chief A Namachivayam and V Vaithilingam, reported The Indian Express. Narayanasamy is the latest one to stake his claim to the post of chief minister. He met party president Sonia Gandhi with Namachivayam on Wednesday to resolve the deadlock.
Though Narayanasamy has not contested the Puducherry polls, he claimed that he has the support of the majority of MLAs. His opponents, however, have refuted the claim. While two-time chief minister Vaithilingam was the leader of the Opposition in the previous government, Narayanasamy's dominant Vanniyar caste accounts for 30% population of Puducherry. Rahul Gandhi is believed to be against the idea of making the latter the chief minister, according to the English daily.
The Union Territory went for polls on May 16, and its results were declared on May 19. Of the 30-seat assembly, Congress won in 15 constituencies and is now set to form the government.
