Novak Djokovic crushes Andy Murray to win first ever French Open title
The World No 1 was in scintillating form, dispatching Andy Murray 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 to win the men's singles title.
World No 1 Novak Djokovic overcame an early hiccup to comprehensively defeat Andy Murray 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 in the final of the French Open in Paris on Sunday. This is the first time Djokovic has won the French Open in his glittering career and it's his 12th overall Grand Slam title. The win means Djokovic now holds all four Grand Slams at the same time, a feat achieved in the men's game only once before, by Rod Laver in 1969. The win also made him the eighth male tennis player to hold a Career Slam, which means winning all four majors at least once.
Murray started off brilliantly, taking the first set 6-3, and looked like he was on course to win his third Grand Slam in his 10th final. However buoyed by a partisan Paris crowd, Djokovic stepped up the ante in the second set with an array of drop shots and never looked back. The Scotsman was crushed in the second set in just half an hour and Djokovic rubbed it in the third set as well.
Murray fought desperately in the fourth set to get some momentum back, but the large number of unforced errors he was committing ultimately came back to bite him. Djokovic won the fourth set and finally got his hands on the Coupe des Mousquetaires, the one trophy that was missing from his cabinet.
