ABBA perform together in public after three decades to mark 50th anniversary
The smash-hit Swedish pop group appeared at a gala event at the Berns Salonger hotel in Stockholm.
Swedish pop group ABBA, which topped worldwide charts in the 1970s and late ‘80s, performed together after more than 30 years at a hotel in Stockholm on Monday. The event at the Berns Salonger hotel marked 50 years since the group’s founding members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson met for the first time. The group’s two “A”s, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstadon, joined them.
The group discussed its journey and gave an impromptu performance of one of its big numbers “Me and I”. According to Swedish newspaper Expressen, which covered the event, Lyngstadon said, “It was absolutely amazing. A lot of emotions. We’ve made this journey throughout our history. Benny and Björn in particular. It’s been very nostalgic.”
ABBA, which shot to fame after winning the Eurovision song contest in 1974, went on its last tour in 1982 in Stockholm. Its members last made a public appearance together in the city for an entertainment venture called Mamma Mia! The Party in January this year, but have maintained that they will not perform together ever again. Among the group’s biggest hits included “Dancing Queen”, “Waterloo” and "Mamma Mia!". Their songs were later turned into a popular Broadway musical, Mamma Mia!, which later became a hit movie starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.
