The National Federation of Indian Railwaymen is likely to serve a notice on June 9, followed by a nationwide strike that will start on July 11, dna reported. The decision comes as a reaction to the Centre's lukewarm response to demands they conveyed in December 2015.

"Consequently, the organisations of the central government employees – Railways, Defence, Postal, Income Tax, Central Customs and Excise, etc whose number is over 32 lakhs – have taken a unanimous decision on 3rd June to go on indefinite strike from July 11," said NFIR General Secretary M Raghavaiah. The organisation represents over 13 lakh railway employees.

The NFIR had asked the government to improve minimum wage, reinstate the old pension scheme as against the new one, and ensure that the pay structure in the Indian Railways was at par with that in the Central Secretariat, among others. They also wanted the Narendra Modi government to stop foreign direct investment in construction, operation and maintenance in the state-owned enterprise. Suresh Prabhu is at the helm of the Railways Ministry in the country.
