A teenager, who was brutally assaulted by a mob on the suspicion that he had stolen mangoes from an orchard, succumbed to his injuries in Kolkata on Wednesday evening. Police have arrested local residents Binod Balmiki and Chinmoy Sardar on charges of murder in this connection.

Aniruddha Biswas, 18, had been complaining of acute abdominal pain and passing blood with his urine since the incident took place at Haridevpur area on the southern fringes of Kolkata on June 2.

The death certificate issued by a private hospital said he died from internal haemorrhage. Some reports also mentioned that the boy, who recently cleared his Class 12 board exams with first division marks, had been suffering from jaundice. "The beating aggravated his condition with several internal injuries," a doctor told The Telegraph.

Supratim Biswas, who was with the victim that day, was quoted as saying, "Aniruddha and I had gone out for a walk. Around 150 metres from his house, Aniruddha felt uneasy, as he was running fever, and we decided to sit down. Two minutes later, two youths ran past us. Then a group of men came running, shouting thief, thief. One man, who seemed drunk, pointed at us and said we had stolen mangoes from a tree. He also claimed we had broken a windowpane while throwing a stone at the tree. The men then pounced on us."

Biswajit Biswas, the victim’s father, told Hindustan Times, “My son was beaten up severely by some youths while he was sitting in the orchard. They kept shouting that he had stolen mangoes. My son pleaded with them but they did not listen. When we went to the police to lodge an FIR and asked them to arrest the culprits, they shooed us off."
