Mob blocks Agra-Delhi highway after more than 50 dead cows found in abandoned truck: Hindustan Times
Mathura's district magistrate said they will investigate the incident.
A mob gathered on the Agra-Delhi highway late on Wednesday after more than 50 cows were found dead in an abandoned truck near Chaumuha village in Mathura district. The incident reportedly came to light after a foul smell started emanating from the carcasses in the evening.
“The matter will be inquired into and the guilty will face action,” Mathura District Magistrate Nikhil Chandra Shukla told Hindustan Times, adding that the vehicle, which had come from outside the state, had been parked on the side of the road since Wednesday morning.
The mob reportedly removed several of the dead animals from the truck before setting the vehicle on fire, and causing a massive pile-up on the highway. A police team and firefighters were sent to the spot, after which the protestors hurled stones at both teams. However, there were no reports of any injuries.
Mathura has been in news since earlier this month when clashes broke out between the police and 2,000 residents when the former went to evict them following an apex court order. The June 2 incident left as many as 29 people, including two policemen, dead.
