Iraq’s interior minister resigns after Baghdad bombing
Mohammed al-Ghabban said the government 'failed in having the different array of security forces work under a unified plan in Baghdad.'
Iraq’s interior minister Mohammed al-Ghabban on Tuesday resigned after a suicide bombing killed more than 200 people in Baghdad earlier this week. Al-Ghabban told media persons that the government “failed in having the different array of security forces work under a unified plan in Baghdad”, Al Jazeera reported.
The ministry will be under his deputy till Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi appoints a new minister. Al-Ghabban had reportedly asked for security inside Iraq cities to be given solely to the Interior Ministry, which also controls the police.
The bomb struck a crowded marketplace in central Baghdad on Sunday, injuring hundreds and killing around 200 people, AFP said. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State. Many people are still missing, officials said.
