Amarnath Yatra stopped, curfew in Srinagar as Hizbul chief Burhan Wani's killing triggers tension
Mobile internet services were blocked across Kashmir, and clashes were reported between protestors and security forces in parts of the state.
A curfew was imposed in Srinagar and several parts of south Kashmir, and the pilgrimage to Amarnath was suspended on Saturday, as tension prevailed in the Valley a day after Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani was gunned down in Anantnag. Mobile internet services were also blocked across Kashmir, reported IANS.
"No yatri was allowed to move from Bhagawati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu city towards the valley owing to the prevailing tension following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani," a senior police officer said. There is no word on when the Amarnath Yatra will begin again.
NDTV reported clashes between protestors and security forces in many parts of south Kashmir. Board exams that were scheduled for Saturday were postponed and train services from Baramulla to Banihal town were suspended.
Wani was among three militants gunned down by Indian forces during an operation that began in Bumdoora village. The 21-year-old leader was considered the new face of militancy in the state, and was known for his online videos asking young Kashmiri men to join the militant outfit.
