Wimbledon: Serena Williams beats Angelique Kerber in straight sets to win 22nd major
The 34-year-old American drew level with Steffi Graf for winning the most number of singles majors in women's tennis.
Serena Williams won a record-equalling 22nd major title on Saturday after beating Angelique Kerber 7-5 6-3 in the Ladies final of Wimbledon 2016. The 34-year-old American drew level with German Steffi Graf for winning the most number of singles majors in women's tennis. This was Williams's seventh Wimbledon title and she also avenged her loss to Kerber in the final of the Australian Open earlier this year.
In what was a thrilling match filled with long and powerful rallies, both players failed to break each other till the end of the first set, which looked to be going into a tie-break until Williams finally broke through to win 7-5. Kerber did not give up and continued with her aggressive counter-punching game.
The second set also looked to be going down to the wire at 4-3 on serve, before Williams broke her opponent again to serve for the set. She made no mistake and wrapped up the set and match 7-5 6-3.
