Tory leader Andrea Leadsom withdraws from race to be UK's next prime minister
The junior energy minister said Home Secretary Theresa May, who is believed to be the favourite to succeed David Cameron, has her ‘full support’.
Junior Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom on Monday withdrew from the race to become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. “[Home Secretary] Theresa May has the support of more than 60% of our parliamentary colleagues and will be able to provide the strong and unifying government that we urgently need,” Leadsom said in a statement, adding that May has her “full support”.
The two Conservative Party leaders were contending for the prime ministerial position after David Cameron stepped down from the post following the Brexit vote for the UK to leave the European Union. Leadsom, who led the “leave” campaign before the June 23 referendum, also offered an apology to May on Monday for her remark that being a mother made her a better suited for the position, BBC reported.
