Officials met on Friday to assess the security preparations, and conducted drills, including several police and military exercises.
Brazil government has decided to intensify security arrangements in the country during the upcoming Olympics, reported Reuters. The decision comes after an attacker drove a heavy truck into a crowd in France’s Nice city killing 84 people and injuring several others on Friday. The games start on August 5, and the administration is expecting at least 5,00,000 visitors from across the world.
The country’s sports minister, Leonardo Picciani, said, “Brazil is confident about its preparations,Personnel are ready, all the protocols have been followed and we are employing the most modern security and defense techniques.” Officials met in Rio to assess the security preparations. They also conducted security drills, including several police and military exercises.
The government has already made arrangements to deploy at least 85,000 security personnel, including police and soldiers. The force will be twice the size of that used during 2012 London Olympics. The country is also co ordinating with international intelligence services to avoid any untoward incident during the games.
