The Noida man whose wife and teenage daughter were gangraped by highway robbers in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr last week threatened on Monday night to commit suicide if the accused were not punished. He has has said the government has three months to act, reported Hindustan Times. The Centre has also sought a report from the state on the incident and the steps it has taken to arrest those involved, reported PTI.

The ultimatum from the family comes amid allegations of laxity by the police. The incident took less than 100 metres from a police post, but officials are believed to have taken hours to reach the spot. The uncle of the minor also alleged that when they called the police helpline, 100, the emergency number was busy at first, and then no one picked up the call.

The state government on Monday suspended seven police officers and set up a 300-member task force to track down the accused. Senior police officer Laxmi Singh said the leader of the gang, who is a serial offender, has been identified and they suspect there were around six attackers in total. So far, three people have been arrested and the survivors have identified them as well. The trio has been remanded in police custody for two weeks. However, at least three others are still on the run, reported NDTV.

The incident has drawn severe criticism for Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. On Monday, Opposition parties demanded his resignation. Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said, "If you can't manage UP, then resign as chief minister on moral grounds."

The incident took place on Friday when the family was travelling to Shahjahanpur to attend a relative's funeral and had set off from Sector 68 at midnight. The men allegedly surrounded their car and then forced all of them into a field nearby. There, they assaulted the woman and the 15-year-old girl. The gang carried out the attack barely 100 meters from a police post, NDTV reported. However, the police allegedly took hours to reach the spot.
