Former Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dayashankar Singh was granted bail on Saturday in a case filed against him for comparing Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati to a sex worker. He was asked to furnish two bonds of Rs 50,000 each. Singh was suspended from the BJP for six years for his comments, which drew widespread criticism and protests by BSP workers in Uttar Pradesh. Singh was the vice president of the BJP’s UP unit before he caused the furore.

Singh had accused Mayawati of giving away tickets for the upcoming UP Assembly elections to anyone who paid her more money. "Even a prostitute fulfils her commitment after she is paid. But Mayawati sells party tickets to anyone who paid her the highest amount. She has become worse than a prostitute and abandons the ideals of Kanshi Ram," he had said.

Singh had gone missing after a case was lodged against him. He was arrested on July 29, after the police found him in Buxar, and sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
