The Indian men's hockey team suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat at the hands of Germany in their Pool B encounter at the Rio Olympics on Monday. The two teams were tied 1-1 with three seconds remaining on the clock, before Christopher Ruhr scored for Germany to sink India. The loss sends India to third in their pool, while Germany went top.

After a keenly contested first quarter, Niklas Wellen (pictured above) scored in the second to give Germany 1-0 lead, but Rupinder Pal Singh soon equalised for India with a brilliant shot from a penalty corner. Singh almost scored in similar fashion in the third quarter, but his shot was blocked by German keeper Nicolas Jacobi. A tight fourth quarter followed where both teams had good chances, but it seemed like they would share the points before Ruhr swooped in and scored a last-gasp winner.
