Kashmir government orders youth's body to be exhumed for autopsy after SC seeks report
The case pertains to allegations that a senior police officer killed a 26-year-old in his house, while the police maintain that he was taking part in protests.
The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday ordered for the body of a 26-year-old man to be exhumed, following allegations that he was killed by the police in Srinagar's Tengpora neighbourhood. The order comes after the Supreme Court ruled asked the government not to arrest Deputy Superintendent of Police Yasir Qadri, who is accused of the killing.
The top court had directed the state to investigate the complaint and submit a report on the matter on August 12. Following the order, Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar Farooq Lone told the chief medical officer to set up a team of experts to conduct an autopsy of Shabir Ahmed Mir's body. The exhumation process will be recorded and carried out under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (East) Syed Haneef Balkhi, The Indian Express reported.
While the police claim Mir was participating in protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Buhan Wani, his family alleged that Qadri shot him dead on July 10 after he entered their house with his team and assaulted Mir's mother. The 26-year-old had tried to intervene. His father had filed a complaint against Qadri, on the basis of which the Jammu and Kashmir High Court had ordered for an FIR to be registered against the senior police officer. The Mehooba Mufti government had moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay in the criminal case proceedings fearing Qadri's arrest.
