Olympics: Gagan Narang, Chain Singh fail to qualify for 50 m rifle prone final
Narang was let down by a poor fourth and fifth series after getting off to a fine start.
India's failure to make it past the qualification stage in rifle shooting at the Olympics continued on Friday as one of the country's top medal prospects Gagan Narang and his compatriot Chain Singh bowed out tamely. Narang, a bronze medalist at the London Games, scored 623.1 points to finish 13th. Chain Singh finished at a lowly 36th, scoring 619.1.
Both shooters got off to an impressive start. Narang rose to fifth place after shooting 104.4 in the second series and 104.6 in his third. However, the 33-year-old failed to build on this, taking 103 and 104 from his fourth and fifth sets. He ended with a tepid 102.4 in the fifth series. Chain Singh started with 104.1 in the first series, but never recovered after falling off the radar in the second, where he scored a modest 101.
