Indian athlete Lalita Babar finished 10th in the women's 3,000 m steeplechase final at the Rio Olympics on Monday. Babar's time of 9:22.74 was three seconds slower than her personal best.

Babar had qualified for the final by finishing with the seventh fastest time in the heats on Saturday, setting a new national record of 9:19.76. She had also become the first Indian woman to qualify for the finals of a track event at the Olympics since PT Usha in 1984.

Ruth Jebet of Bahrain won the gold medal and had looked like she would break the world record of 8:58.81, set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, before slowing down during the final stretch. She ended up with a time of 8:59.75.
