Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday held Pakistan responsible for the ongoing unrest in Kashmir. Addressing a Bharatiya Janata Party's "Tiranga Yatra" event, Jaitley said India will not compromise on security, reported ANI.

Jaitley said the neighbouring country has been sending terrorists to India since they lost the wars in 1947 and 1965. He said Pakistan is spreading unrest in the Valley and using new methods to disrupt peace in the country. According to him, the country's unity has been challenged and the forces behind it need to be defeated, reported IANS.

"A new serious situation has arisen. Pakistan and various other forces are involved in it, and the country's unity has been challenged once again," Jaitley said. He appealed to the people of the state to come together and fight against such forces. "It's a challenge for us. We will not compromise with it," he said, according to IANS.

He said the Narendra Modi government has three clear priorities regarding the Kashmir issue. "First is that there will be no compromise with the security of this nation and those who threaten with violence. Secondly, the focus is on the development of the state, which the Congress and the National Conference refused to address for seven years. And third, as BJP has a stronghold in Jammu, Nirmal Singh should think about gathering resources from the Centre to contribute to the state's development," the Union minister said.

On Saturday, a delegation of Jammu and Kashmir Opposition parties, led by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, met President Pranab Mukherjee to discuss the crisis in Kashmir. The delegation submitted a memorandum to the president, urging him to call for a "credible and meaningful process of political dialogue" involving "all stakeholders" in the state.

The region has been under curfew for the past 44 days. The restrictions were imposed following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani on July 8. Mobile phone services were partially restored in the region on Saturday.
