Bronze-medallist Sakshi Malik India's flagbearer at the Rio Olympics closing ceremony
The wrestler was the first to win for the country at the Games.
India’s bronze-winning wrestler Sakshi Malik was the flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics on Sunday. Summer Games Chef de Mission Rakesh Gupta said the decision was made after India's last medal hope wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt lost 0-3 to Ganzorig Mandakhnaran in the qualifying round of the 65 kg freestyle wrestling match.
Malik was chosen to represent India at the closing ceremony as PV Sindhu, who won silver in badminton, left Rio de Janeiro for Hyderabad earlier. Gupta said, "Sakshi and PV Sindhu...both displayed immense courage and determination during their competitions," according to PTI.
Brazil celebrated its art, music and dance at a three-hour-long spectacular closing ceremony. It handed over the Olympic flame to Tokyo, which will host the 2020 Olympics. The ceremony concluded with a confetti and firework show, BBC reported.
