The United Liberation Front of Assam has kidnapped the son of a Bharatiya Janata Party leader in the state, the group revealed in a video on Monday. Kuldeep Moran, the son of Tinsukia Zila Parishad Vice President Ratnaswer Moran, was kidnapped on August 1, according to India Today. The insurgent group has demanded Rs 1 crore as ransom.

In the video, Kuldeep is seen kneeling, surrounded by five masked men holding guns. He requests both his family and state Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to arrange for his release by paying the ransom amount. Earlier, the ULFA had sent a separate message with the ransom demand to BJP MLA Bolin Chetia, who is Moran’s uncle.

The 27-year-old is considered close to the legislator, who won from the Sadiya constituency during the recent assembly elections in the state. Both Ratnaswer and Chetia were members of the Congress before switching to the BJP. While the Assam police is conducting a search for the 27-year-old, Chetia said he will do whatever it takes to free Kuldeep from the ULFA.
