Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday tweeted out a clarification of remarks he had made about freedom fighters at a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh, saying he at no point suggested that Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose or Jawaharlal Nehru were hanged. The tweets came as a response to media coverage that suggested Javadekar had got his history wrong by claiming that the three were hanged.

Addressing the meeting in Madhya Pradesh, Javadekar had said: “The fight for independence that began in 1857 ended 90 years later when we threw the British out. We salute freedom fighters…. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel, Pandit (Jawahar Lal Nehru)... Bhagat Singh and Rajguru who were hanged."

The slight inflection after "Pandit" led to the confusion, which the minister has since clarified, adding that he was "amused" with the news.
