Four Lashkar-e-Jhangvi militants who attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009 killed in Lahore
The encounter took place when a group of seven members of the banned outfit attacked a Crime Investigation Department team in Manawan.
The Pakistan police on Sunday shot dead four Lashkar-e-Jhangvi militants in Lahore who were allegedly involved in the attack on the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009, reported PTI. The encounter took place when a group of seven militants attacked a Crime Investigation Department team in Manawan, Lahore, while trying to free a group of arrested militants.
However, the remaining three managed to get away. A police spokesperson told PTI that they have started a search operation. The deceased have been identified as Zubair alias Naik Muhammad, Abdul Wahab, Adnan Arshad and Attiqur Rehman. Arms and ammunition have also been recovered from them. The spokesperson said, “They were involved in attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009 and Moon Market Lahore attack in 2008.”
LeJ chief Malik Ishaq, who allegedly planned the 2009 attack on the visiting cricket team, was also killed in a similar encounter with the CID a year ago. In March 2009, seven players from Sri Lankan were injured and six Pakistani policemen were killed when 10 militants attacked a bus ferrying the cricketers at Liberty Chowk, near Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium.
