Tennis: Serena Williams loses World No. 1 spot to Angelique Kerber after semifinal defeat at US Open
The American was beaten by Czech Karolina Pliskova, missing out on her chance to win her 23rd Grand Slam title.
Serena Williams on Thursday lost her World No. 1 ranking to Angelique Kerber, after crashing out of the US Open. She lost the semifinal to Czech Karolina Pliskova 2-6, 6-7 (5/7), while the German secured her spot in the final defeating Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3.
Kerber's shift to the World No. 1 spot is certain regardless of her win or loss in the US Open final on Saturday. The Women's Tennis Association will update its rankings on Monday. "It’s just incredible, a great day. To be here in final is incredible. To be No. 1 in the world, it sounds amazing," she said. Kerber had won her first Grand Slam title after beating Williams at the Australian Open this year.
Williams lost out on her chance to win both her 23rd Grand Slam title as well as her what could have been a record 187th straight week at number one. The American recently broke Roger Federer's record, after her 308th match win at a tennis major.
