CBI arrests Haryana civil judge in connection with wife's murder
Ravneet Garg, who was the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gurgaon at the time of the crime, has been remanded in police custody for five days.
The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a civil judge from Haryana on Wednesday night in connection with the murder of his wife three years ago. Ravneet Garg has been remanded in police custody for five days, reported PTI.
However, the CBI did not specify the charges against him. An investigating officer told The Times of India, "We are looking at getting a lot of answers from him. We will be able to elaborate on his role only then."
The body of Geetanjali Garg was found at Gurgaon Police Lines on July 17, 2013. Her body had multiple bullet injuries. The brother of the deceased filed a case at Civil Lines police station, Gurgaon, on July 20, 2013. In the complaint, her brother Pardeep Agarwal named three people, including Garg who was the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gurgaon at the time, and alleged that Garg’s family ill-treated his sister.
According to the report, the woman’s family alleged that she was killed for not giving birth to a male child. The couple, who got married in 2007, had two daughters aged four and five years when Geetanjali Garg died. The case attracted a lot of attention after her family took their fight to social media. They started a Facebook group called 'Justice for Geetanjali' and took out candle marches for her. On August 8, 2013, the CBI took up the case “at the request of Haryana government and after notification by the Centre,” said the CBI spokesperson.
Geetanjali Garg's father OP Agarwal told The Times of India, “This act [arrest] is long delayed but has given us hope that she will get justice and no other Geetanjali will fall prey to such men," said Agarwal.
