Pargat Singh quits Shiromani Akali Dal, days after launching Aawaaz-E Punjab with Navjot Singh Sidhu
The hockey player-turned-politician accused party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal of betraying the trust of the state's people.
Recently suspended politician Pargat Singh on Monday resigned from the Shiromani Akali Dal, days after launching the new front, Aawaaz-E Punjab, with Navjot Singh Sidhu. He alleged that Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal had “betrayed the trust of Punjab’s people”. The hockey player-turned-politician, who represents Jalandhar cantonment, was suspended on account of his alleged “anti-party activities”. He has submitted his resignation letter to Badal, PTI reported.
Singh, along with Sidhu and the Bains brothers, had launched the political outfit on September 8 in Chandigarh. The cricketer-turned-politician had referred to Aawaaz-E Punjab as "the resurrection and the revival" of the state. Sidhu, a former Bharatiya Janata Party MP, said his front wanted to "shake the system that had ruined the state", adding that "those with vested interests cannot accomplish this".
An Aawaaz-e-Punjab poster said it will "raise its voice against those who have destroyed Punjab". The launch came about five months before the state Assembly elections.
