Shivpal Yadav gets back cabinet portfolios after Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh's intervention
Former mining minister Gayatri Prajapati, who was sacked over allegations of corruption, will also be given back his post.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said on Friday evening that his uncle and Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav will get back the three ministries that were taken away from him earlier this week. Gayatri Prajapati, who was sacked as the mining minister earlier this week over allegations of corruption, will also be given back his post.
The chief minister told NDTV, "I have two duties, as chief minister and as son. I will honour the word of the party president and I will do everything to make my father happy."
The news comes hours after party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav mediated and attempted to end the feud. Mulayam Singh, Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav had a 30-minute meeting on Friday afternoon after which the party patriarch said, "There will no division in the party till I am here. We are a big family, differences may occur."
Shivpal Yadav, who addressed supporters outside his home on Friday said, " Netaji (Mulayam Singh) and Akhilesh didn’t accept my resignation. I left it to netaji and whatever he will decide we will follow.” He assured his supporters that he will fulfill all his responsibilities. “If I get departments I will work on that, if I become party chief I will fulfill that responsibility,” he said.
On Thursday, Shivpal Yadav had submitted resignation letters to the chief minister and the party president, quitting all party and government positions. His supporters had taken to the streets demanding that he be reinstated.
Media reports of a rift in the political family emerged after Mulayam Singh Yadav replaced Akhilesh Yadav as the state's party president earlier this week. The move to replace Akhilesh Yadav was triggered by fears of an anti-incumbency vote against the SP government, The Indian Express had reported. The chief minister had then responded by stripping his uncle Shivpal Yadav of his key cabinet portfolios and launched a campaign for the upcoming state elections on Wednesday.
