New Zealand continued to dictate proceedings against India on Friday, Day 2 of the first Test at Kanpur. The Kiwis finished at 152/1 even as rain washed away more than a session's play. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson (65 not out) along with opener Tom Latham (56 not out) amassed an unbeaten 118-run stand, thwarting the Indian spinners. The hosts were bundled out for 318 earlier in the day.

As India started the day at 291/9, Ravindra Jadeja (42 not out) chipped in with lower order runs and took the score past the 300-run mark. Neil Wagner picked up the final Indian wicket, forcing an edge off Umesh Yadav. Indians started well with the ball, with Yadav picking up the wicket of the out-of-form Martin Guptill.

Williamson and Latham swept the ball ferociously against Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and both caught lucky breaks. Williamson survived a caught-behind appeal off Ashwin while Tom Latham was adjudged not out from a bat-boot appeal by the TV umpire.

Heavy rain hit the stadium a few overs before the tea break, and play was suspended for the day.
