Election Commission, Facebook tie up to launch 'register to vote' campaign in five poll-bound states
From October 6 to 9, users in UP, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand will receive a notification that will direct them to a website where they can sign up.
The Election Commission of India has collaborated with Facebook to launch a campaign to promote voter registration, ahead of the Assembly elections in five states, Chief Electoral Officer Radha Raturi announced on Thursday. The first-of-its-kind initiative was launched in collaboration with the chief electoral officers of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, PTI reported.
From October 6 to 9, Facebook users in poll-bound states will receive a notification in their news feed, reminding them to cast their vote. Clicking on the 'register to vote' button will take users to the National Voters' Services Portal, which will assist them in the registration process.
The campaign is an attempt to encourage the 155 million Indians on the social media platform to exercise their franchise. Raturi said, "I appeal to people from all walks of life to register as voters through the process."
The office of the Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer has taken the initiative a step further by launching its own Facebook page and Twitter account, @UttarakhandCEO, through which it will share election-related information. It also plans to launch a live, interactive platform.
