India managed to salvage a draw in the first Test with England in Rajkot on Sunday. India were on 172/6 as the day’s match ended. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten knock of 49 helped the team. England set a target of 310 runs after declaring their second innings on 260/3.

Alastair Cook hit a splendid 130 against a helpless bowling attack. His partner, Haseeb Hameed scored a brilliant 82 before falling to Amit Mishra. Joe Root had a short stay as he was undone by Mishra on 4. Ben Stokes remained unbeaten on 29, and Cook was bowled out by Ravichandran Ashwin.

India began their innings on a horrible note with Gautam Gambhir falling for a duck. After scoring a brilliant century in the first innings, Cheteshwar Pujara was out for 18 in the second innings after he was caught Leg Before Wicket (LBW) by Adil Rashid. At tea, India were on 49/2. Sensing a win, England got Murli Vijay (31) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) out in quick succession to make it 71/4.

However, skipper Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin played themselves in, though Ashwin was out for 32. Wriddhiman Saha too was out for 9 as India were struggling at 132/6. But, Kohli played a valiant knock of 49 to help India earn a draw. He was partnered well by Ravindra Jadeja, who played a crucial knock of 32. In the end, England gained the upper-hand and will go into the second Test at Visakhapatnam on November 17.
