Reddy wedding: Anti-corruption activists call for investigation into Bellary mining baron's accounts
A Bengaluru-based advocate claimed Rs 650 crore was spent on the celebrations, which were attended by several politicians and celebrities.
Anti-corruption activists have called for an investigation into mining baron GJ Reddy’s accounts following the lavish celebrations organised for his daughter’s wedding. The activists have called on the Enforcement Directorate as well as the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate Reddy, who served a five-year prison sentence in connection with illegal mining cases, The Hindu reported.
National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources president SR Hiremath said the CBI and the ED had to “wake up, raid Mr Reddy’s house and ask for accounts”. “Even as demonetisation has hit the common man, allowing Mr Reddy to display his wealth without any checks is the greatest attack on the Constitution,” said Hiremath, who has filed cases against illegal mining in the Bellary district of Karnataka.
Meanwhile, a complaint by a Bengaluru-based advocate claimed that Reddy spent approximately Rs 650 crore on the wedding. In the four-page complaint to the Directorate-General of Income Tax, TN Murthy sought to know how the mining baron was funding the wedding, especially after the Centre demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8. Assets worth Rs 70 crore belonging to Reddy and his wife had been seized by authorities, Murthy said. “He still managed to invest crores of rupees on his daughter’s wedding. How can this be possible?” he asked.
Several political leaders and celebrities attended the wedding, including state Home Minister G Parameshwara, state Bharatiya Janata Party president BS Yeddyurappa and Tamil actor Vishal, according to Hindustan Times. At least 3,000 guards and 500 bouncers were present at the celebrations, which included a replica of their family home in Bellary as well as the Hyderabad home of the groom, Rajeev Reddy. Around 50,000 guests were expected to have been invited for the function.
