The Ministry of Railways will conduct a safety audit at Pukharayan, the site of the Patna Indore Express derailment that occurred on November 20 and has begun the process of laying down new tracks to restore train movement in the area, ANI reported. The ministry on Monday also formed a 12-member team to look into the incident. The team will comprise Government Railway Police personnel, with Deputy Superintendent of Police GRP Jhansi leading the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government filed a First Information Report against “unidentified railway employees” in connection with the accident after survivors complained that staffers may have neglected safety measures, The Times of India reported. Kanpur Inspector General of Police Zaki Ahmed said the toll had risen to 146, while officials announced the conclusion of the search and rescue operations on Monday morning. Over 200 others were reportedly injured in the incident.

Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Monday had said a forensic inquiry into the Kanpur train accident would be conducted to look into all possible angles. Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha had said that the accident could have been caused because of a fracture in the rail tracks. Divisional Railway Manager for the Jhansi Division SK Agarwal, however, had ruled out the possibility of any foul play. “The Sabarmati Express crossed the same track nine minutes earlier. It would have reported any fault,” he had said. Investigators, however, are tight-lipped on the cause of the incident.
